However getting around parked trucks is proving to be a challenge for the mighty volvo.

Bossy! I need your help. Tell me everything about your J-car experience.

Everything?!!!?? Ok. I bought the mighty J car in 2010 for $2800 with 90,000 kms. Since then I drove it to just under 209,000 kms. I just returned from a 5443 kms road trip in it.

The advantages of J car are as follows:

1) Cheap to own

2) Cheap to run

3) Parts cheap, junk yard parts plentiful except 03-05 trip pieces, but even those aren’t too hard to get.

4) Spartan. Nothing electric breaks because you dont have electric do-dads. A Modern car it is not.

5) Torquey. It goes pretty good....for a 13 year old economy car. Yeah a modern camry will smoke it’s ass...but a modern camry costs a lot more than your average J body.

The disadvantages of J car:

1) Spartan...this is not a modern car.

2) The rust here in ontario is getting to them now if they’ve been driven a lot.

3) My speedometer doesn’t work, my fuel guage works intermittently, and my rear defrost is broken. My check engine has been on for over a year but getting through emissions doesn’t seem to be a problem ;)

Here is the Oppositelock review I wrote a while ago:

Overall...the J car is big enough to be practical, and torquey enough to let you drive at moderate speeds. If you’re looking for cheap, reliable, spartan transport you could pay big bucks for a Mirage or Micra something like that...or you could buy a J car and drive it 300,000 kms until it’s wheels fall off.

Here’s a review I wrote last November. Since then I replaced a coil pack ($150 for mechanic to do it) and ball joint $200 but I’m still thinking it is accurate.

6/10 cannot say I’ve gone wrong with the J body but make no mistake, it’s not luxurious in any way.

Thanks. I'm tempted to dump my G-body for a rust-free J-body.

A rust free J car is a fine car for a young man starting out like yourself. They are fairly wrenchable. I myself, of no mechanical knowledge was able to suspension swap mine. If it is truly rust free as you say and priced in the $2000-4000 range...you’re doing well. The L61 DOHC engine is reliable as all get out.

If you ask a few guys on here whom will admit to having them, they hate them but they can’t kill them. lol.

I just want a cheap beater that can pass BC inspection. I know someone willing to cut me a deal on a 2002 Automatic sedan.

Bc does inspections? Didn’t they abolish those in like 1983? No e testing in BC that I know so check engine light is not a problem. This is the first and so far only car I’ve ever bought with my own money. If it’s clean rust wise with the L61 you won’t be turning heads but you’ll save your nickels.

Only out of province inspections. I might be moving there.

Me too. I hope. I am from there also. But I have suffered in ontario for 10 years now haha.

Where in BC are you from? I'm probably moving to Kelowna.

Nice. I am from Port Moody which is about 45 minutes east of vancouver but still west of the fraser river. Don’t worry it will make sense in time haha. Kelowna is really nice in summer.

Even in spring it's nice. Port Moody is a great place.

Ha, I saw this and immediately went “downtown Ottawa.” Slater Albert and O’Conner, right?

Both because of the buildings and someone turning the wrong way there. We have so many effing clueless drivers here, not that poor signage and too many one-ways help matters.
